This vast second story rooftop in Toorak required an altogether different approach.
The brief was to design a garden with minimal plants, minimal upkeep and minimal weight. Whatever we put on the roof had to be oversized to fit with the scale of the space. Weâve used large format tiles and giant ceramic pots. The greenery mostly comes from artificial turf laid on interlocking drainage cells.
We raised the paving to match the grass level and designed the balustrade to heighten the walls without blocking the surrounding views. Modular box hedge benches were custom made to border the skylight and be light enough to be moved easily. This design is essentially a folly and was a lot of fun.
